Lucca is known as ‘town of the walls’ and it has roman origin, still visable in the ancient structure of the amphitheatre square, nowadays one of the most evocative square in the world and included in the last circle town walls, which embrace the town. The ancient Foro, that now it is called Piazza S Michele, is still the heart of the life of this beautiful town.
The Lucchesi set up Commune in 1119 and later Federico Barbarossa gave Lucca the status of free Commune.

The town sprawled and there was the necessity to defend
its freedom, gained after much effort, so the authority begun the construction of a new powerful circle of town walls, 12meters high. The 13th century is the period of splendour of the town, silk working and a florent activity of merchants brought great richness. At the end of 14th century town walls were extended, under the oligarchy of Paolo Guinigi, during the Republic of Lucca. New great town hall were built in the 16th century, those we can see today and which are about 4200 meters long.
Even the first half of XIX century was important for Lucca from a town planning and cultural point of view, under the Pricipality of Elisa Baciocchi.
